Student Dress Code

The NCLA students in grades 7-12 are cadet members of Civil Air Patrol and must adhere to CAP dress codes for uniform wear and appearance. Uniform information is contained in the CAP Uniform Manual found here.

Additionally, the following details overall grooming and appearance requirements for student-cadets in grades 7-12 at The NCLA while wearing the CAP uniform:

Male Students

K-6 Boys must wear --

  • White collared, polo shirts with navy pants or shorts
  • Navy collared, polo shirts with khaki pants or shorts
7-10 Boys must wear --
  • Sky blue, collared polo shirts (Civil Air Patrol blue) with navy or khaki pants or shorts.
  • Hairstyles must be conservative with hair being off the collars (also see CAP grooming standards). 
For all Boys:  Pants must be worn at the natural waist. (No "sag and drag" pants are allowed.) Earrings and other body piercing ornaments are NOT permitted.

Female Students

K-6 Girls must wear --
  • White collared, polo shirts with navy skirts, skorts, pants, capris, or shorts OR
  • Navy collared, polo shirts with khaki shirts, skorts, pants, capris, or shorts.
  • They may also wear navy or khaki jumpers if the appropriate colored shirt is underneath.
  • Make up is not permitted.
7-10 Girls must wear --
  • Sky blue, collared polo shirts with navy or khaki skirts, skorts, pants, capris, or shorts. OR
  • Red collared, polo shirts with navy or khaki skirts, skorts, pants, capris, or shorts.
  • Any make up worn by middle or high school girls should be natural and minimal.
  • Earrings are permitted if they do not exceed one inch in length and are not distracting to the educational environment. Only ears may be pierced.
NOTE:  None of these items can have colored trims or logos (unless it is The NCLA logo). The length requirement for skirts, shorts, or skorts is no shorter than the fingertips when the student's arms are extended at his/her sides. The shirts/blouses may be long or short sleeved depending on the season. If the garment has belt loops, then a belt must be worn.

All Students

  • No sleeveless shirts are allowed.
  • If an undershirt is worn, it must be white or navy.
  • Shirts must stay tucked in. Shirts must also be long enough to remain tucked in when the student's arms are raised. They must also cover the chest.
  • Sneakers, casual, or dress shoes are permitted. (no togs, shower shoes, flip-flops, or open toe shoes may be worn at any time.) Sneakers should be brought to school for use in gym to avoid hard soled shoes on the gym floor. Boots are not permitted except as outerwear. Girls are limited to no more than a 2.5 inch heel on their shoes.
  • Cold weather attire to be worn inside during the school day may include white or navy  colored sweaters or vests. Pullover navy or white crew neck sweatshirts may be worn; however, if said sweater or sweatshirt has a hood, the hood many not be worn up. (None of these may have logs/emblems/words on them unless they are The NCLA's logo.) Also, appropriate uniform shirts must be worn underneath the sweater, vest, or sweatshirt.
  • Outside coats/jackets must be hung in cubbies for the school day.
  • Belts must always be worn with pants having belt loops. These belts may only be black or brown in color and cannot have an ornate belt buckle. Navy blue may be worn when wearing navy blue bottoms. These belts can be leather or woven.
  • No sweatpants are allowed except as required for athletic wear.
  • No hats or headgear of any kind is permitted inside the building.
  • Extreme hairstyles are not permitted. Hair color for boys and girls must be of natural tones.
  • Chains of any kind are not permitted to be worn on garments. (This does not refer to necklaces.)
  • Bandanas are not permitted on any part of the body.
  • No wristbands or arm accessories are allowed except for watches.
  • When wearing the Civil Air Patrol Uniform, students will comply with all CAP uniform requirements.
